![]() Folk Songs
of Old Kentuckyby Ralph Lee Smith & Madeline Macneil This book provides 20 Anglo-American folk songs, field-collected by two remarkable real-life "song catchers," Josephine McGill and Loraine Wyman, in the Cumberland Mountains of Kentucky in 1914 and 1916. Josephine and Loraine, the latter accompanied by Howard Brockway, composer and arranger, were among the first to search for folk songs in the Southern Appalachians. The adventurers traveled hundreds of miles on horseback and on foot through an isolated area to which radios, roads and cars had not yet come. They made friends in lonely log cabins, and transcribed some 200 song treasures, some of which they published in books that are now out of print and rare. This book gives the background of each, and includes accounts of their mountain adventures, published by Josephine and Howard in long-forgotten publications. The second half of the book is a selection of the songs, presented with standard notation, guitar chords, and dulcimer tablature. Seven songs are arranged for both DAD and DAA tunings, four for DAD, three for DAA, and six for the DAC tuning. Little Sparrow,
Barbara Allen, Frog Went a-Courting, As I Walked Out, Sweetheart in the
Army, Charming Beauty Bright, John Riley, The Lonesome Scenes of

The Wonderful
World of DAAby Madeline Macneil This book contains 19 arrangements of
traditional Irish, Welsh, French Canadian, Scottish, and American folk
tunes and songs that have rich melodies, all in the DAA tuning.
Although the DAA tuning uses predominantly linear movement of the
fingers along the fretboard, the richness of the DAA tuning more than
compensates for extra hand movement. These arrangements are written in
notation and tablature for the three-string dulcimer with chord
symbols, with a mix of strumming and fingerpick/flatpick arrangements.
Lyrics are included where appropriate. Beginning level of difficulty.
The companion play-along CD features all of the tunes in the same order
as the book, played by the author.

particularly good when played on a banjo dulcimer, and are arranged in
a style that enhances the banjo sound. Tab is layed out as standard

speed and up to speed. All songs are in DAD and can be played in

Fingerpicking
Dulcimer by Janita Baker A
collection of 21 songs arranged in a fingerpicking style for the
mountain dulcimer, this book offers a wide variety of musical genres
and playing levels. Divided equally between arrangements for three and
four equidistant strings, the songs progress in difficulty within each
section from beginner to advanced level. Each piece is written in both
standard music notation and dulcimer tablature, and is accompanied by
performance tips for playing that song. Many arrangements utilize the 6
1/2 fret, and tunings range from standard modal tunings to four-string
variations. The arrangements cover a wide range of song styles
including traditional ragtime, blues, and classical standards. There is
an extensive introduction on playing techniques for both left and right
hands, tunings, reading tablature, and dulcimer embellishments. The
accompanying CD is an instrumental recording of solo dulcimer, designed
to give the student a note-for-note reference to each written
arrangement while providing a performance-quality listening experience.
